Description
Almost Midnight is the fourth studio album by the American pop/rock band David & the Giants, independently released on their own label Song of Songs Records in March 1980. (The album title is derived from the scripture Matthew 25:6 – “and at midnight there was a cry made, behold the bridegroom cometh” as per back cover notes.) The album was recorded by band members David and Rayborn Huff at Huff Recording Studio in Laurel, Mississippi (except the two live tracks – A5 and B4 – which were recorded by David Yelveton); with the band producing. All songs written by the Huff brothers; David, Rayborn and Clayborn. “Ten Miles High” was originally recorded and released as a single by the band back in 1969.
Their fourth self-produced album finds the Giants adding more electric guitar to their mix, sometimes crossing over into a «Watergrave»-ish rock sound on cuts like the title track and «The Well (Will Never Run Dry)». «Ten Miles High» is another catchy number, one that shows the boys also had a pretty good handle on disco. The rocker «Holy Rain» and the harmonica-boogieing «Upper Room Experience» were both taken from live performances. Closes with «Daddy», a heartfelt plea to an unsaved father. Keith Thibodeaux is the band’s new drummer. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
