Description
Under Control is the ninth studio album by the American pop/rock band David & the Giants, released on Myrrh Records in 1985, a division by Word. The album was recorded by David Schober and band members Rayborn and David Huff at Huff Recording Studio in Forest, Mississippi; with the band producing. Mixed by David Schober at Huff Recording Studio.
David & the Giants are David Huff on guitars and lead vocals, Rayborn Huff on keyboards and background vocals, Clayborn Huff on bass and background vocals, and Keith Thibodeaux on drums and background vocals.
This is a genuinely exciting rock album from a perennially underrated rock band. With proper promotion, David and the Giants could be as big on radio as they are at the outdoor Christian music festivals where they generally steal the show out from under the noses of the headliners. In the meantime, ‘Under Control’ jumps right up there with the year’s best.
What the guys do is create melodic, hook-laden rock music. Their arrangements and musicianship are always simple and direct, their harmonies always cut through the dross, and their lyrics are always straightforward evangelical. No ego trips, no artsy synthesizer trips, not one unnecessary note or beat.
«He’s Got It Under Control», «Taking It to the World», «It’s Just a Matter of Time», and «You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me» are classic examples of tasty southern rock’n’roll. «You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet» and «Sweet Inspiration» are sly tributes to well-known rock tunes. «His Love Lifted Me Up» and «Borrowed Time» are sensitive, vulnerable ballads while «Rockin’ for the Rock» is a no-holds-barred, monolithic stadium rocker.
If you like Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart or DeGarmo & Key, you’ll think that David and the Giants have it under control as well. [Bob Darden, CCM, December 1985]
