Inhabitants of the Rock is the eighth studio album by the American pop/rock band David & the Giants, released on Myrrh Records in 1984, a division of Word. The album was recorded and mixed by Dennis Richey, Jerry Masters, and band members Rayborn, Clayborn, and David Huff at Huff Recording Studio in Laurel, Mississippi; with the band producing and arranging. Horns recorded at Sea Saint Recording in New Orleans, Louisiana; and at Master’s Touch in Nashville, Tennessee. Synclavier recorded at Monarch Studio in Atlanta, Georgia.
David and the Giants’ latest release rocks steady with tight, aggressive musical arrangements and the soulful, expressive vocals of lead singer David Huff. If there are any comparisons to be made, the group sounds like a gutsier version of the Joe English Band. Rockers «Are You Ready?», «Higher» and «Moving On Up» chug along with an intensity that sweeps you off your feet and never lets you down.
The ballads are carefully crafted and sometimes hint at other well-known tunes for their musical inspiration: the theme from ‘Hill Street Blues’ underscores «I Am Persuaded», and «I Can Depend on You» is vaguely reminiscent of «Crystal Blue Persuasion», the late-’60s hit. This isn’t to say that the melodies are copied, as the songs have musical identities all their own.
«I’ve Been Drinking» has absolutely nothing to do with alcohol. We’re talking about living water here, with a rollicking, rockin’ paraphrase of John 4 and a meaty squawk box guitar solo. «You’re Gonna Be Somebody» closes the album. It’s a song about a survivor from the mean streets of Chicago who became whole, once Jesus walked the streets with him.
