Description
Mirrored Dreams is the sole full-length album by the British rock band Sea Stone, independently released on Plankton Records in May 1978.
Back in 1977 the rock band Sea Stone, featuring young guitarist/singer/songwriter Simon Law, were ready to release their debut album, but no record label could be found to take the risk of unleashing their uncompromising Christian message to the world. So, Simon decided to take action by setting up his own label and Plankton Records was born (so named because we are the smallest fish in the great sea of record labels. When we get big we’re changing the name to Whale Records!). In 1978, 1,000 LPs of the album Mirrored Dreams were pressed and released and after making a profit from the sales of the LP the money was ploughed back into the business.
40 years later, in 2018, the label released a multi-artist double disc compilation entitled Plankton: Forty Years – 1978-2018 (sub-titled Celebrating the History and Musical Journey of Plankton Records), featuring selected tracks by various Plankton-signed artists.
Here’s another candidate for a megabucks LP, possessing all the required ingredients which are namely 1) it’s British, 2) it’s a private pressing, and 3) it’s got an edge. Sure enough copies of this progressive hard rock outfit’s sole LP have been seen turning up in the international scene at $250 a pop. Overpriced as usual in this game, yet Mirrored Dreams has much to its merit, such as beaucoup hard-edged guitar work, phasing on «Helping Hand», big heavy fuzz solo on «Wake Up». Most songs settle in a slow-to-medium paced artsy blues rock kind of groove. Only «Foolish Hero» ups the pace for a BTO-styled jam session. My only beef might be the vocals are a bit lightweight, nothing fatal whatsoever. Clean production. Chunky bass prominent. Melodic use of both acoustic and electric piano throughout. Another fine entry in the ever-so-slim field of good progressive/classic rock. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
