Skywire is the debut album by the American alternative rock band Common Children, independently released on Tattoo Records in March 1996. The album was recorded and mixed by Derri Daugherty at Neverland Studios in Nashville, Tennessee; with Steve Hindalong producing, both of The Choir fame.

‘Skywire’ is a clever blend of much of the best modern rock. The ferocity of early Pearl Jam, the rawness of Nirvana, the pop sensibility of Better than Ezra – it’s all here. The secret of its success, however, lies in the fact that it reflects the band’s influences without sounding like a mere rip-off; certainly the guiding hand of producer Steve Hindalong (The Choir) helps here. Session aficionado Phil Madeira and Adam Again‘s Riki Michele pepper the project with additional flavor.
The music is melodic, with a major edge. Guitar player and lead vocalist Marc Byrd keeps things interesting throughout, with both his vocal and musical instruments. Although at times the lyrics are a bit puzzling and vague, that is not necessarily a bad thing. It serves to leave the listener with something to chew on, for ‘Skywire’ is about faith that exists in the midst of struggle, questions and doubt.
Though there’s not a dud in the dozen, several songs do stand out. They include «Drought», «Throw Me Over» and «Hate», the latter of which finds Byrd lamenting himself in song with a vengeance that brings to mind Filter and Rage Against the Machine.
