Vision

Description

Vision is the solo debut album by the British singer and songwriter Chris Eaton of Mark Williamson Band fame, released on Reunion Records in 1986, manufactured and distributed by Word. Also manufactured and distributed by A&M Records. The album was engineered by Jack Joseph Puig with Brown Bannister and Puig producing. All songs written by Chris Eaton.

Wait a second! What’s Daryl Hall’s new solo album doing in a cover marked “Chris Eaton”? Seriously, Chris Eaton is known by many as songsmith to Amy Grant, Cliff Richard, and Russ Taff and, to the truly hip, as keyboardist in the underappreciated U.K. combo The Mark Williamson Band. But Chris is his own man, both as writer and performer.

‘Vision’ was probably not the best choice for the album title or for the lead-off track. Though it’s one of Eaton’s best tunes, his reading doesn’t differ substantially from Taff’s, and the vocal effects on the fade only accentuate comparisons to Hall. Stick with Chris into «Don’t Underestimate My Love», however, and you’ll see his own personality emerge in this danceable delight. The tracks are spectacularly slick due to mix-master John “Tokes” Potoker whose efforts invigorated Michael W. Smith’s latest. «When My Heart Breaks» is a certain candidate for mainstream adult contemporary play. Its simple plea for understanding between mates is a topic all can identify with.

The self-explanatory «The Golden Rule» features a relentlessly percolating drum/bass riff and a searing guitar part, and «Hold Back the Tears» likewise never lets up. The snappy snare drum sound, made famous by Phil Collins, kicks this one along, and some scintillating guitar over the fade makes you rush to turn over the record.

Although this is his solo debut, Chris Eaton is obviously no novice. ‘Vision’ is a well written and excellently produced and performed collection of pop/rock delights. So whether you buy half a dozen, ten, or more records in a year, make sure that ‘Vision’ is on the list. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, October 1986]
