Description
Ain’t Jesus Good is an album by the American folk/pop group The Simple Truth, self-released in 1973. (Originally a custom pressing, later released on Creative Sound in a different cover.) The album was recorded and mixed by Chet Barnett at Benson Sound Studio in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Arranged by the band with string arrangements by Bill Hedrick.
The Simple Truth features Dave Adams on vocals, banjo, harmonica, and guitar; Hal Waterhouse on vocals and rhythm guitar; Paul Land on vocals, rhythm and lead guitar; and Rick Passer on vocals, bass, and acoustic guitar. The album as well features Larry Benson on electric piano and Rex Stafford on drums.
The four men of The Simple Truth perform a fairly simple appealing brand of Jesus music, often with a twangy country flair. The vocals are kind of relaxed and easygoing, sometimes tending toward gospelly harmony, while string arrangements water down a couple songs. Usually there’s a pleasant sometimes jangly electric guitar angle as heard on «Time To Get It Together», «I’ve Changed» and «It’s Free». Only here can you experience the country version of «Trust And Obey» (well ok, John Fischer did it, too), along with a blue-grassy cover of «Front Seat Back Seat». Highlight is «How Can I Love», a wonderful little song that’s rife with phased guitars and lengthy melodic leads. Overall the album is an okay mellow easy country-rock affair with one special moment demanding your attention. Originally a custom pressing, later released on Creative Sound (CSS 1576) in a different cover. [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
