Goldie’s Last Day

Description

Goldie’s Last Day is the sophomore album by the American pop/rock band PFR (a.k.a. Pray For Rain), released on Vireo Records in 1993. The album was recorded at North Beach Studio in Franklin and at The Dugout in Nashville, Tennessee; and as well at Omni B; with Jimmie Lee Sloas producing for RBI Productions. Mixed at OmniSound Studios in Nashville.

After a successful debut, the Minnesota band has returned with more of its undeniably fun and adventurous pop/rock, scoring major marks with an album that keeps getting better, even after innumerable spins on the stereo, in the car, at work… you get the picture. The title cut captures the bittersweet remembrances of a dear, departed canine while capitalizing on influences from The (timeless) Beatles to the modern quirkyness of groups like The Rembrandts and The Posies. With tons of surprises thrown in for good measure (including the re-emergence of PFR’s unusual ‘cup’ sound), ‘Goldie’s Last Day’ is sure to be a hit.

Proficient songwriting (by PFR’s Joel Hanson and Patrick Andrew except for one tune written by Gordon Kennedy and Jenny Yates) anchores the entire album as the fascinating melodies, cool guitar riffs and lyrical hooks stay with the listener. And the solid playing and great harmonies of this three piece outfit (guitarist Hanson, bassist Andrew and drummer Mark Nash) along with the vision of producer Jimmie Lee Sloas keeps the ’60s rock vibe alive and well. With lead singer Hanson handing the mike over to Andrew on a few tunes, ‘Goldie’s Last Day’ obtains even more of a Beatle-esque sound while keeping the overall feel very fresh and entertaining.

Lyrically, the album serves to point the listener straight to Christ as the sole source of hope and change. «Dying Man» focuses on God’s amazing if mind-boggling plan of redemption – “It took the grace of one living/ To save this dying man” while «I Don’t Understand» admits Christians don’t have all the answers but emphasizes the importance of trusting God anyway: “I don’t understand/ I don’t need to/ I know You’ve a plan/ You will see through/ It is in Your hand/ I belive You.” The album honestly relates the everyday struggles and questions of the Christian life while encouraging the listener “to hang on to Him” and focus on the one and only “true love.”

Following the impressive, Dove Award-winning debut (‘Pray for Rain‘) would be a challenge for any young band, but PFR has proven more than fit for the task. With its musically broad appeal, ‘Goldie’s Last Day’ should propel PFR to the front of the pack. [April Hefner, CCM, January 1994]
