Description
The self-titled debut album by the American inspirational pop quartet Point of Grace was released on Word Records in 1993. The album was recorded by John Jaszcz, Scott Williamson, Wayne Morgan, and Doug Sarrett at Recording Arts and Quad Studios in Nashville, Tennessee; with Williamson and Robert Sterling producing. Mixed by Jaszcz at Recording Arts.
Take four young ladies who have been singing together for several years and give their already incredible harmonies some dynamic songs to belt out, and the result could be a major hit in the Christian marketplace. Wait a minute – four girls singing adult contemporary-style songs to encourage the church… sounds a lot like another quartet made up of guys, 4HIM. The comparison may not be a bad one, only Point of Grace is a little more aggressive on a few songs and the harmonies bring back memories of Wilson Phillips.
Point of Grace’s Denise Jones, Shelley Phillips, Heather Floyd and Terry Lang switch back and forth on lead vocals throughout most of the songs with each voice fitting in its own unique way. The first single, «I’ll Be Believing», hit #1 on the CCM charts in November with lyrics like these – “If the bottom drops/ Out here on my own/ I won’t be alone/ I’ll keep believing You/ I’ll be believing.” With voices that mesh as well as these do, this certainly won’t be the last we will hear from Point of Grace. [April Hefner, CCM, February 1994]
If you heard «One More Broken Heart» on last issue’s Cross Rhythms Experience you’ll know what to expect, classy pop gospel by your ladies with enough vocal chops, song hooks and record company promotion muscle to walk off with 1994’s Dove New Artist Of The Year Award. Alongside the oozingly soulful «Broken Heart» there are several other quality songs, like the rockier «Living», «The Legacy» and the poignant ballad «Jesus Will Still Be There», sung in an impressive demonstration of switched leads. The original sleeve photo made Point Of Grace look dauntingly straight but though there’s a bit of the Sandi Patti easy listening sound in the group’s stylings, there’s also enough contemporary Wilson Phillips-style ideas to make ‘Point Of Grace’ well worth investigating if you’re on the lookout for classy inspirational pop. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, October 1994]
