Sold-Sight Unseen

Description

Sold-Sight Unseen is the sole album by the British synth-pop band Zipcodes featuring two former After the Fire members, keyboardist Peter Banks and drummer Peter King, released in the UK on Plankton Records in 1988. It is a cassette-only release featuring demos recorded by the band, put together by keyboardist Peter Banks when drummer Peter George John King passed away from cancer (August 13th, 1958 – July 15th, 1987). Also featuring input by additional musicians: Stewart Van Blandameyer, Elana Harris, Mark Pearson, Colin Pye, Keith Smith, Dave West, and Simon Wilkinson.

This is another English release that was a bit under the radar. If the names look somewhat familiar, it is because Banks and King were former members of After the Fire. When Peter King passed away in 1987, Peter Banks put together some of their demos and released this cassette. I would say that ATF is a good starting place for this band, maybe a bit pop-ier, but still very catchy and 80s sounding. Just a little less new wave/prog rock than ATF, but still bearing those genres as influences. There is a long list of people that played on this album, with each song having several different people playing. Kind of hard to find now, but something that should get more attention from fans of After The Fire for sure. [Christian Tape Underground, April 2020]

Pete King (13 August 1958 — 15 July 1987) was a British musician.

The drummer Pete King played in the British punk band “The Flys”, then joined “After the Fire” throughout most of the band’s brief heyday, performing on their biggest stateside hit, “Der Kommissar”, before he became the replacement of Jan Dix in the German rock band BAP in 1986. He died in 1987 of testicular cancer, at the age of 28. The song Flüchtig (literally: “fleeting”) was released as a tribute to him on BAP’s 1988 album Da Capo.
