A little note from us to you

We started this company to provide a musical platform that would let people know the hope of the Gospel. Well, in two years we have received incredible support from so many people that we wanted to say thank you and that we really appreciate it. We have also realized that there are a lot of people out there that have been really hurt by either a Church or a Christian, and that as soon as they found out that our bands were Christians they became very close minded. To those people I want to say that I know that both the Church and Christians are guilty of some really stupid stuff, and that there has been a lot of hurt, but think about this; If you read the Bible you will see that Christ himself was also bummed at religious people and that the reality of what He was saying was simply that He wants to have a friendship with us on a personal level. I know it sounds weird, but I challenge you to give it a try. The next time you’re bummed, lonely, scared or frustrated, go for a 5 minute walk and talk to Him just like you would a friend. Tell Him exactly how you feel and what your thinking. It might feel weird, but if you’re already bummed, what have you got to lose. After you talk to Him then, Take Time To Listen…

DIME STORE PROPHETS will be putting out their 2nd record on May 6th, 1997 entitled ‘Fantastic Distraction’ produced by John Keane (REM, VOL, Cowboy Junkies) & Masaki (7 Day Jesus, 5 Iron Frenzy, Dryve). The two songs on this sampler are live cuts. Studio versions will be on the album. DSP is from Oakland, CA.

DRYVE: Their debut album ‘Thrifty Mr. Kickstar’ hit stores Feb, ’97. The songs on this sampler include a live version of «Television» and a studio track of «She Ain’t Ready». Dryve was selected by CCM as one of the best new bands of the year. They are from San Diego, CA.

SHERRI YOUNGWARD: The two songs by Sherri are studio cuts that will be featured on her debut release ‘Faces, Memories, Places’ in store April, ’97. Produced by Aaron Sprinkle (Poor Old Lu). Sherri is from Seattle, WA.

THE ELECTRICS: Both songs on this sampler are from their indie release and will be re-recorded by Masaki. The Electrics are from Glasgow, Scotland. I met them in Germany and was blown away by their music, their live show, and their personalities. They are one of the most fun bands I have ever seen. Their record will debut at Cornerstone.

ROSE BLOSSOM PUNCH is the new band from Aaron Sprinkle (Poor Old Lu). This song was put together on three days to give a sneak preview of what is to come later this year. Rose Blossom Punch is from Seattle, WA.

THE ADVENTURES OF JOHNNY RESPECT has been signed to a development deal and will spend the spring touring with Five Iron Frenzy. They are from Detroit, MI. Please let us know what you think. This song is from their indie demo.

FIVE IRON FRENZY is from Denver, CO. Their debut album ‘Upbeats and Beatdowns’ has been in stores since Nov. 1996 and been in Soundscans Top 50 since its release. The two songs here were both recorded live. «Where Zero Meets 15» is from their current release. «Most Likely to Succeed» will be on their new album that will hit stores Oct. 1997.

MODEL ENGINE: Formerly known as Black Eyed Sceva, Jeremy and Brad added a new drummer and a 2nd guitar player. They will be putting out a new record this summer. They changed their name because of the new line up, but will still play some BES material. Model Engine is from Santa Barbara, CA.

Vol 2 was reviewed back in issue 38 of Cross Rhythms and saw Sammy Horner feeling refreshed to the tune of 10 squares! Sammy turns up again, this time on the CD with The Electrics alongside Dime Store Prophets, Dryve, Sherri Youngward, Rose Blossom Punch, The Adventures Of Johnny Respect, Five Iron Frenzy and Model Engine (formerly Black Eyed Sceva). So to the dissection – Dime Store Prophets are in the Paul Weller mode of ‘intelligent rock’ with two solid, if uninspired contributions. Dryve are somewhat more tempting (see 10 square review of their album in issue 41) with Hammond and harmonica adding that extra flavour, but they miss the VOL mastery. Five Iron Frenzy stand out with a new twist on the Madness sound, a nifty brass section is a lot of fun. The rest make creditable contributions. This leaves The Electrics who are in a class well above anything else here with two old favourites – «Get To Heaven» and «Cry For A Year». If, as the recent TV documentary claimed, Shane McGowan is one of the most significant songwriters in the last two decades then this CD only confirms that The Electrics must be on a par with The Beatles and Elvis!
