Coram Deo II: People of Praise

Coram Deo II, sub-titled People of Praise, is a multi-artist project featuring Charlie Peacock, Steve Green, Margaret Becker, Steven Curtis Chapman, Bob Carlisle, as well as Out Of The Grey, released on Sparrow Records in 1993. The album was produced by Charlie Peacock who also wrote or co-wrote the songs. The first installment of this series was released the previous year, entitled Coram Deo: In the Presence of God.

Producer/songwriter/artist Charlie Peacock must be a very tired man at this point after collaborating on numerous projects last year (Out of the Grey, Margaret Becker, Bob Carlisle, etc.), but this has to be one of his crowning achievements. The first ‘Coram Deo‘ project captured the souls of its listeners with stirring songs of worship and praise sung by some of Christian music’s most outstanding voices. This sequel does no less, with more inspiring songs sung with passion and grace by artists like Peacock, Out of the Grey, Becker, Carlisle, Steven Curtis Chapman, Steve Green and CeCe Winans. As Peacock’s brainchild, the ‘Coram Deo’ projects unite simple beauty and art with words of true devotion and inspiration as the liner notes written by Douglas Kain McKelvey (who also co-wrote five songs here) for each project also serve as a devotional booklet.

The second ‘Coram Deo’ installment (which means “in the presence of God”) features 10 songs written or co-written by Peacock and emphasizing “that all of life is to be lived as worship – in view of Your sovereignty, in enjoyment of Your presence, in light of Your revelation and in response to Your love” (from McKelvey’s devotion on «In Spirit and in Truth»). Musically, the album takes full advantage of the vocal skills of all the soloists as well as the talents of some of Nashville’s finest players. Each and every song is sure to become a classic, but two of my personal favorites were Peacock’s «Unto You Lord» and Out of the Grey with Steve Green on «Rejoice in Jesus». Music like this helps bring praise music into the ’90s, providing the church with alternatives for Sunday worship and giving the body songs to carry in their hearts every day of the week.
