Southpaw

Description

Southpaw is the debut album by the American metal band Precious Death, released on Metro One Recordings in 1994, distributed by Diamante Music Group (though originally self-released by the band on Precious Death Music the previous year, reviewed by Heaven’s Metal in the September 1993 issue). The album was recorded by Chris Maddalone at Dino M II Studio in Torrance, California; with Dino Maddalone producing for Dino M. Productions.

Featuring Christopher Scott on vocals, David Bishop on acoustic and electric guitars as well as backing vocals, Andy Koehler on bass and backing vocals, and Roger Sampson on drums. Backing vocals on tracks 7 and 8 provided by Bryan Kemper, Chris Olsen, and Dennis Olsen; backing vocals on tracks 1 and 9 provided by Wallace Helms, and backing vocals on track 3 provided by Kim Brooks. Dave “Shivertown” is featured on guitar on track 9.

Here’s a band who are making big waves at the moment in California, both in Christian and secular music circles, with nominations for a total of five categories in the 1993 LA area music awards. This band’s sound is obviously influenced heavily by the likes of Alice In Chains. Chris Scott’s vocals are very similar to that band’s Layne Staley. Along with the Seattle, a grunge-type vocal is a heavy almost thrash style guitar. But these heavy guitars aren’t overdone. Here you can find musical influences that vary from jazz to blues and even to hardcore/funk on «Shine». Standout songs are «Force Fed», «Talk About The Weather», «Hello» and the chart breaking ballad «One Day To Live». The lyrical content of this album is of high quality. There’s not many bands around in Christian metal that sound like this, no doubt Precious Death’s innovative style will be picked up by others. [Matt Anderson, Cross Rhythms, June 1994]
