Come Back Soon

Description

Come Back Soon is a multi-artist sampler by various artists connected to the Warehouse Ministries located in Sacramento, California, independently released on Sangre Records in December 1978 (an outreach of Warehouse Ministries). The album was recorded and mixed by Dan Willard at Maranatha Studios in Santa Ana, California; with Tom Stipe producing (formerly of Country Faith, Wing & A Prayer, and Richie Furay Band). Strings arranged and orchestrated by David Diggs. Horns provided by the Seawind Horns, arranged by Seawind‘s Bob Wilson.

‘Come Back Soon’ was originally released in 1978 by Sangre Productions on their own Sangre (Spanish word for “blood”) label. Sangre was an outreach of Warehouse Ministries of Sacramento, CA. The LP was modelled after the well-known sampler series from the artists of Calvary Chapel by Maranatha! Music. I picked up my copy on one of my final visits to The Warehouse in 1978 while on tour with my band, Aslan.

It’s interesting to note the close connections between Sangre and Maranatha. The project was produced by Tom Stipe (Country Faith, Wing & A Prayer, Richie Furay Band, etc., and producer of many Maranatha projects). The strings were arranged and orchestrated by David Diggs (Good News). The project was recorded and mixed at Maranatha Studios (Santa Ana, CA). Percussion orchestration was done by Alex MacDougall (The Way, Daniel Amos). And “special thanks” go to Maranatha! Music. It should come as no great surprise that The Warehouse was, and still is part of the Calvary Chapel network of churches and outreaches.

«Too Many Reasons», written and performed by Sharon McCall, is track 10 of the LP’s total of 11. Background vocals are provided by Tom Stipe, as well as by Terry Taylor and Jerry Chamberlain of Daniel Amos; Daniel Amos’ Marty Dieckmeyer plays bass (apparently he was the project’s session bassist, as he appeared on 5 tracks), and Daniel Amos’ Alex MacDougall was the drummer. David Diggs played piano.

Other well-known Jesus Music artists appearing on the project are Michele Zarges (before she became Michele Pillar); Tom Howard; and Bo MacDougall (Alex’s brother). The horn arrangements were done by Bob Wilson of Seawind, and of course, Seawind did all the horn parts.

A nice eclectic little project, and a good snapshot of the young and growing music ministry at Warehouse Ministries in 1978, which was later to spawn The 77s, among others. The artists at The Warehouse were much more varied and experimental than the majority of the output from Maranatha, which tended to stay in a mostly M.O.R. pop-country-rock mode. It’s no wonder that Aslan felt so completely accepted whenever we played there! [Bill Hoppe]
