For Every Heart

Description

For Every Heart is an album by the American singer and songwriter Twila Paris, released on StarSong Records in 1988, distributed by Sparrow/Star Song Distribution. The album was produced and recorded by Jonathan David Brown at his studio Johnny dB’s Basement in Antioch, Tennessee; and at The Pond in Franklin, Tennessee. Mixed by Brown at Johnny dB’s Basement.

With Leslie (aka Sam) Phillips singing in other marketplaces and Amy Grant hinting that her current tour may be her last, Twila Paris and producer Jonathan David Brown couldn’t have picked a better time to release Paris’ most pop-oriented album to date. Paris sounds more contemporary than ever; ‘For Every Heart’ is not musically too distant from what Amy Grant accomplished on ‘Lead Me On‘ minus the nice acoustical stuff.

The praise chorus remains Paris’ pieve de resistance, and she disappoints not with «All That I Need» and «For the Glory of the Lord». Nevertheless, she’ll win a few new fans with the catchy «Sweet Victory» (featuring some nice quartal harmony on the chorus) and the moving «Peace be Still» (where she sounds deadon Amy Grant in the long vowels in “waves” and “obeys” – it’s scary).

Brown brings in Carl Marsh and the ubiquitous Smitty Price for some nice arranging and keyboard work. But the musical highlight of ‘For Every Heart’ is the bass playing of John Patitucci, of Chick Corea’s Elektric Band. Lovers of virtuosic electric bass will enjoy this album if for no other reason than Patitucci’s sweet slides and subtle phrasing. Jaco Pastorius lives!

Paris’ lyrics (she wrote all 10 vocal selections; there is a rather nondescript instrumental, entitled «Mt. Nebo», for which no one takes credit) focus on everlasting love – God’s for us (in «True Friend», «Neverending Love» and «You Have Been Good») and ours for our mates (in «I Will Never Go», an ode to matrimony).

The Christian music world certainly misses Phillips and will miss Amy’s touring (if she decides that son Matthew ought to see more of his mother’s eyes around the house), but ‘For Every Heart’, Paris proves worthy of carrying the cerebral pop/rock torch for quite a few years to come.
