Description
The self-titled album by the American country-rock quartet The Hallelujah Joy Band was released on Creative Sound in 1973. Also released in the UK on Dovetail Records in 1975. The album was recorded by John Pearson and Bill Hargraves at Cavern Studios in Independence, Missouri; and was produced, arranged, and mixed by the band.
The Hallelujah Joy Band features Steven Glick and Dennis Krause on guitars and vocals and a rhythm section consisting of John Clay on bass and Rob Brennan on drums as well as vocals. Bill Speer of Paul Clark & Friends fame is sitting in on keyboards on “My Friend Jesus” and “Lord God Almighty”. All songs written by the band’s guitarists, Glick and Krause.
Kansas male foursome doing laidback electric hippie country rock, sounding at times like the Grateful you-know-who. A few slow dragging tunes, but mostly opts for an easy mid-tempo rural stroll, standouts being «Take Some Time», «Ollie», «My Friend Jesus», «To All There Comes A Time», «Could This Be You» and «It’s All Coming To An End». Rarely aggressive, but has enough Gram Parsons twang and longhaired Dead vibe to keep it interesting and well above mellow (call it Dead Lite). Gotta hand it to them for song titles like «Jesus Broke The Wild Horse In My Heart». Member Dennis Krause later had a solo LP on the Holy Kiss label. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
