The Crossing – Dancing at the Crossroads

Description

Dancing at the Crossroads is the third album by the American Celtic folk-rock combo The Crossing, released on Grrr Records in 1993, manufactured and distributed by Grrr Records. Re-issued in co-operation with Storyville Records in 1994, a “new folk” oriented division of R.E.X. Music. Also released in the UK the same year, distributed by GMI Music. The album was produced by the band.

The Crossing is Tony Krogh on vocals, highland pipes, uilleann pipes, guitar, and bouzouki; Pat Peterson on bodhran, whistles, bones, and vocals; Jeniffer Ingerson on fiddle and vocals; Mark Hall on flute, harp, dulcimer, whistles, and vocals; Hilde Bialach on cello, vocals, piano, and keyboards; and Mike Baznik on guitar, bouzouki, vocals, and keyboards.

When I get to meet the new MD at Nelson Word I’m gonna walk right up to him and shake him by the hand, ’cause here at last is THE roots album from America. Cross Rhythms has been raving about it for months, even making it to the Cross Rhythms choice list a few issues ago. It’s taken a year or so to get here, but it’s been worth the wait. “Yanks playing Celtic music!” I hear them scream from the top of Sleeve Donard… “They canny play oor music wi’ passion,” comes the cry from Fort William folkies… But wait I say…put away your Skene Dhus and just listen, because these boys and girls can play…and play well! Reels and jigs galore come fast and intricate. Old classics like «There Were Roses» sound like they’ve been recorded on a Saturday evening in McConnels pub in Dublin… It all sounds like, well, Belfast bodrhan beating, Perth pipe playing, Wicklow whistles, Fort William fiddles and top class traditional music. Get the idea? Yessir, when I meet that MD from Nelson Word I’m gonna shake him by the hand and say, “What you lack in speed, you make up for in quality!” [Sammy Horner, Cross Rhythms, December 1994]
