Description
Battle Cries is an album by the American melodic hard rock band The Brave, released on Pakaderm Records in 1992, distributed by Word. The album was recorded at Pakaderm Studios in Los Alamitos, California; with John and Dino Elefante producing.
Over the last few years, former Kansas singer/keyboardist John Elefante and brother co-writer/guitarist Dino Elefante have sought to elevate the stature of Christian bands aiming for the arena/corporate rock mantle through big, bold productions. Credited with Petra‘s renewed viability and a growing stable of artists in the Pakaderm label (including the duo’s own Mastedon), the Elefantes have raised the standards of all bands seeking to introduce fans of mainstream rock to the message of Christ’s love.
With The Brave’s debut, Pakaderm has found a band whose talent and energy matches the bigger-than-life production values. Lead vocalist James Salters delivers strong, soaring melodies, reminiscent at times of a blend of strengths from Petra’s past and present singers, Greg Volz and John Schlitt. And, at times, The Brave wed Petra styled anthems and adult pop with Def Leppard-like post-metal arena/pop. The production sweetens a touch more than I’d like, but the final confection delivers a hearty slab of cake in the twin guitar attack of Freddie Tierra and Stace Roberts to match the vocal bed icing.
While a plethora of mainstream bands struggle to keep the arena rock dinosaur from extinction (notably Firehouse and Hardline), here The Brave deliver music of similar strength, yet with a bold proclamation of ministry. The Elefante’s professionalism, The Brave’s raw talent, and a batch of memorable and engaging pop rock songs assure that ‘Battle Cries’ is just the beginning. [Brian Q. Newcomb, CCM, September 1992]
