Description
Chroma is a cassette-only album by the American new wave/alternative rock band The Primaries, released on Silent Rooster Music in 1992. The album was recorded at Valley Studios in Seattle, Washington; except “Live Rain” recorded live at Washington State University, May 1989. Mixed and mastered by Brent DeRocher at the Daily Plant. Produced by the band in cooperation with Silent Rooster Music. All songs written by Andrew Merchant and John Stephenson.
The Primaries features John Stephenson on guitar and vocals, Andrew Merchant on guitar and vocals, Greg Tauchek on bass, and “Al” on drums.
A different version of “Along The Way” was featured on ACM Journal‘s 2nd Anniversary Compilation multi-artist sampler CD which was released ahead of the band’s Chroma album.
I can’t remember where I heard of The Primaries, but I have had their tape for a while and have always loved their slightly quirky brand of early 90s college/alt rock. They have ads for the ACM Journal inside the tape, so it seems they were well-connected with the Northwest scene of the day. They even note that they updated the song «Along the Way» from the second ACM Compilation based on fan feedback to become «Along the Way Again». They sound like they would have been a good show with Poor Old Lu, as they feel like they are the same style, but don’t sound the same at all really. Cool “color” theme throughout the tape, including the names for the sides. [Christian Tape Underground, January 28, 2021]
