Cruel Inventions

Description

Cruel Inventions is the sophomore studio album by the American singer and songwriter Sam Phillips, released on Virgin Records in May 1991. The album was produced by T-Bone Burnett. “With just one listen, fans of artists such as Natalie Merchant, R.E.M., and Elvis Costello will surely find a heroine in Sam Phillips.” according to All Music Guide.

T-Bone Burnett dresses up the folk-rooted songs with rich, near-baroque accompaniment, using offbeat instruments like the ude and chamberlain and layering Ms. Phillips’s multitracked harmonies on swirling choruses…there’s even a small string section, arranged by Van Dyke Parks, on some tracks.
