Innermission

Description

Innermission is an instrumental album by the American keyboardist, composer, producer and arranger Richard Souther, released on Meadowlark Records ‎in 1986, manufactured, marketed, and distributed by Sparrow Records. The album was part of the Meadowlark Series, a series of contemplative instrumental albums launched by Sparrow Records in late 1985, sub-titled “Music without words for thoughts without limits” and later ammended to “Music for your personal retreat“. The album was produced by Peter York. All songs written by Richard Souther except track B4 co-written with Peter York.

Richard Souther is to be commended for, if nothing else, the tremendous job it must have been arranging these tunes. With over 20 instruments and computers involved, it’s easy to imagine these songs taking on a life of their own. To Richard’s credit, they still sound like songs, not chips fitted together to fit an electronic puzzle. As befits the title, there’s less “Miami Vice”-styled material here and more introspective work. Like brush strokes on a painting, «Line Upon Line» builds, but you remain aware of each new layer of music. «Your Gentle Manner» reinforces the fact that the warmth in electronics depends on who’s playing them. «Uncharted Waters» and «Time Frames» display a jazz sensibility not as evident on Souther’s first release. Please, Sparrow, rush this one out on CD! [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, February 1987]
