Description
End of Silence is the debut album from the American symphonic metal band RED, released on Essential Records in June 2006, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, distributed by Provident Integrity Distribution. The album was recorded at Paragon Studios and Dark Horse Studios in Franklin, Tennessee; with Rob Graves producing.
In 2007, the album won a Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year at the 38th GMA Dove Awards. It was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album at the 49th Grammy Awards. The album was certified Gold (500,000 copies sold) by the RIAA in March 2016.
Already a major hit on US Christian radio, Red’s songs are born from past mistakes but set in the light of the hope of salvation. Lyrically, the tracks are fairly conventional and occasionally clichéd – fading, brokenness, bleeding and blindness are well used metaphors by the band as they try to express a time when they were far from Christ, and the redemptive power of his love and forgiveness. Members of the band have struggled with pain and addiction, and these songs clearly emanate from the desperation felt through those experiences. Taking the music beyond standard nu-metal riffs are some fantastic string arrangements and imaginative melodies. The opening title track is a great introduction and the whole album’s production is aggressive and solid. With so many US bands sounding painfully stylised, this team from Pennsylvania stand out from the crowd. [Ewan Jones, Cross Rhythms, September 2006]
End Of Silence Deluxe Edition, CD+DVD 2008
This Grammy-nominated album from 2007 is a gem. This deluxe edition, as well as the biting rock of the original release, also includes a bonus DVD crammed with an impressive live concert, music videos, behind the scenes documentary and band blogs from the road. If you haven’t heard of Red, this would be the place to start, this CD will be getting repeat plays from me. The album features plenty of driving, staccato guitars against soaring vocals and excellently orchestrated strings. And real strings too from the Prague Philharmonic. This is a highly produced, well executed album with instantly memorable songs. Frontman Michael Barnes has a powerful voice capable of screaming with the best of them, but for the most part melodic and heartfelt. And the rest of the band are more than capable, but never overplay: the song is king. This may not be something you’d play on a Sunday morning, but it is something you can worship through. Listen to «Already Over Part 2», the penultimate track – you can hear one man singing his worship to God. [Paul Kerslake, Cross Rhythms, January 2010]
