Description
The self-titled major label debut album by the American alternative rock/funk rock band Reality Check was released on StarSong Records in 1997, a division of Sparrow Communications Group, distributed in the US by Chordant Distribution Group. Marketed and distributed in Europe by Alliance Music. The album was recorded by Todd Collins and Ric Robbins at House Of Insomnia in Franklin, Tennessee; with Collins and David Litchens (formerly of Petra) producing for Gotee Bros. Entertainment and Fungi Productions, respectively. Additional recording at Fungi Studios in Franklin. Mixed by F. Reid Shippen, assisted by Jim “Butta” McCasin, at The Border in Franklin.
Reality Check is Chris Blaney and Rod Shuler on vocals. Nathan Barlowe on vocals and guitar, and Dave Muckel on horns and vocals.
Reality Check combine an interesting mix of rock/sub-metal industrial pop, blended together with hints of light rap, to produce some good music. However, this ‘alternative’ music falls into the all to familiar alternative music scene which, in my honest opinion, surely detracts from its truest definition. There is enough herein to capture and maintain interest to a point (check out «Plastic», «Mascquerade», «Apart From You» and the excellent «Speak To Me»), but at times the vocals tend to be on the weak side, and the music uncomfortably akin to pieces from DC Talk’s Jesus Freak. On the whole this debut is good, but all too familiar to stand out. [Alex Figgis, Cross Rhythms, December 1997]
