Description
Natural High – sub-titled A Folk Musical about God’s Son – is a folk musical composed and directed by the American composer Ralph Carmichael and producer/arranger/composer Kurt Kaiser, featuring Ralph Carmichael’s Young People choral group, released on Light Records in 1971.
“Natural High” was the follow-up to the highly successful folk 1969 musical “Tell It Like It Is.” Both projects were co-created/co-written by Ralph Carmichael and Kurt Kaiser and released on Ralph’s Light Records/Lexicon Music. This 1972 album featured Ralph’s Young People choral group with solos by John Bahler, Kim (Carol) Carmichael, Gene (Murph) Morford, Jackie Ward and Tom (Mr. Thumbs) Bahler. Choreography was created by Ellen and Alex Plasschaert as a help to local groups who wanted to perform the project.
Your basic Ralph Carmichael and Kurt Kaiser youth project, which in spite of being called a “folk musical” comes across more like a Christian mixture of Hair, Up With People, Burt Bacharach and The Brady Bunch. Most of the rock crowd back then probably would have snickered at it, but in retrospect the album actually has a semi-unique pop-rock sound, a dated kitschy square-becomes-hip sort of deal. Big arrangements and production, including some period electric guitar and organ, lively ensemble vocals, spiced up with lingo like “hey man”, “outasite!” and “that’s groovy!”. Join the character of Murph on his spiritual journey as he and the gang roll through titles like «We’re On Our Way», «Get Myself Together», «The Sequence Of Events», «I’m All Thumbs» and «God Doesn’t See Us Through The Flowers». «Searching Questions», «God Can See Us», «When I Think Of The Cross» and «Moment Of Truth» are some of the better known songs here. Features the Ralph Carmichael Young People, with solo performances by John Bahler, Kim Carmichael, Gene Morford, Jackie Ward and Tom Bahler. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
