Description
Apologia / Pilgrim is a album by the British singer and songwriter Joanne Hogg with violinist Natasha Petrovic, independently released in 2023. Mixed and mastered by Stu Reid at The Copper House.
Featuring Joanne Hogg on vocals and piano, Natasha Petrovic on violin and viola, Troy Donockley on Whistles, Graeme Flowers on Flugelhorn and muted trumpet, Josh Mahood on double bass (with Michael McCluskey sitting in on electric bass on track 1), and Stu Reid on drums.
March 2020 was the start of a global pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
My social bubble of immediate family quickly expanded in those early weeks to include several additional young people, and in the months that followed, there were many big questions asked, and long conversations and debates.
I realised very quickly that I was not prepared or equipped to navigate these discussions, and that I was struggling to articulate a biblical worldview and what I truly believed.
This collection of songs chronicles some aspects of that journey, and that process continues.
There are 8 verses in scripture that use the Greek word “apologia”. The most familiar is 1 Peter 3: 15.
“Always be prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” .
I hope the songs will encourage, and maybe challenge you, wherever you are in your journey.
The pilgrim path is typically a difficult one, but it’s worth it.
It is only THE TRUTH found in THE WORD that really sets us free… that is the best news ever!
