Description
Coffee with Lazarus is a full-length album by the Nigerian-born, British based singer and songwriter Ben Okafor, released in the UK on Plankton Records in 2000. Also released in the US on Universal/Wrasse. The album was recorded in the US with Harvey Jones producing.
When originally reviewed in the Oct/Nov 2000 Cross Rhythms, the Rimmer was ecstatic, awarding it a coveted 10 squares. Now with its reissue into the mainstream I can’t argue for this is surely Ben’s finest work. Recorded in America and with a bombastic fusion of African and reggae rhythms. This is brilliant stuff with «Give Food», examining the feeding of the five thousand and exhorting the listener to feed the hungry, and «You’ll Be Fine» with joyful African rhythms both outstanding tracks. At last the world seems to be catching up to something the Church has known about for years, Ben Okafor is a major talent. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, February 2002]
