Beautiful Day is an album by the British contemporary praise and worship combo Revive, released on Word Entertainment in 1998.
Revive is not just a band but it’s also a church in the fair city of Leeds, and here we have a generously filled album (over 64 minutes) of all sorts of stuff, nearly all of which is used by the church in their Sunday worship in a local pub. To say I was impressed understates immensely; their worship must be something else! One moment meditational, the next chugging along to an infectious back beat, throwing in some rap along the way, and then laying down a 120 bpm dance track guaranteed to satisfy the most discriminating of moshers, this is almost unclassifiable – but I love it! The programming of Steven Cudahy is never overpowering, Corrine Bailey’s vocals come over sweet and clear and Justin Thomas chips in with some vocals and helps the other two write most of the music. I particularly like Steven’s nine minute instrumental «Hug», with a piano melody line over a swirling wash of synths and percussion; «Remember Mercy» has a techno and orchestra backing track supporting Corrine, using words from the prophet Habakkuk; we mosh along to «Moving On Up», chill out to «Be With You», «Frail» is a mix of Justin’s rapping and Iona-esque ambience, and the seven minute, 40 second title track starts slow and dreamy, then picks up tempo with more strings and percussion backing a lovely set of words sensitively sung by Corrine. This is a drop of good stuff, tha’ knows; Sunday with Revive must be a beautiful day. [Trevor Kirk, Cross Rhythms, August 1998]
