Description
Trust is the fifth and final studio album by the American soul singer and songwriter Denny Correll, released on Maranatha! Music in February 1991. The album was produced and engineered by Larry Brown.
When Denny Correll was making his early albums in the late ’70s and early ’80s, Michael Bolton was still performing with a second-rate rock band called Blackjack; Joe Cocker was in-between comebacks, Phil Driscoll was primarily a trumpeter and Ray Charles was still “the right one bay-bee.” (Whether everyone knew it or not.) Consequently, not too many folks were interested in the tonsil-stretching vocal theatrics of a blue-eyed soulster like Correll. But trends come around and go around, and R&B with rock ‘n’ roll guts is in vogue once more. Never was there a more appropriate and welcome time for Correll’s life-affirming sweet soul music.
And ‘Trust’ is dripping with soul; from the slinky guitar and horn figures to the gospel-tinged background vocals to the rock-solid rhythms. And of course, right up front are Denny’s vocals. His plaintive baritone is burnished with just the right mix of world-weariness and maturity. Correll’s lyrics, mostly written in tandem with brother Tim and guitarist Eric Turner (of Darrell Mansfield‘s band) are as straightforward as the music is grits and gravy R&B. Correll’s message is a simple – there’s only one thing in this life you can put total trust in, and that’s Jesus Christ. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, January 1992]
