Description
Fun and Games is the third album by the American punk rock band the Huntingtons, released on Flying Tart in June 1997, distributed by PCD. The album was produced by Mass Giorgini.
Although punk music has severely tapered off in the general market of late, the teenage-driven genre remains strong in the Christian music world. How else could a lesser-known outfit such as The Huntingtons manage to muster a second project in less than two years?
Relying heavily on the same power pop/punk from ‘Sweet Sixteen’, the Huntingtons return with ‘Fun and Games’, a full-fledged exercise in frivolity. The production is once again quite sloppy, but the only obvious difference is the trace of classic pre-original punk era rock (i.e. The Clash, The Buzzcocks, etc.).
Other than «Crackhead», the album’s lone social commentary song, all of the rest are about high school issues such as girls, heartbreaks, bullies, nerds, having fun, more girls, etc.; you get the point. The lack of vocal clarity doesn’t help the listener decipher the songs’ lyrics, and no lyric sheets are provided, but the quaint little cartoon drawings for each song help signify meaning (not that the song titles are veiled).
Should The Huntingtons put a little more emphasis on production, and should the band ever land on a bigger label, they could probably draw closer to Christian punk kings MxPx. Yet, being on a more indie-styled label like Flying Tart doesn’t hurt legitimacy with teenagers who dive wholeheartedly into modern punk culture. In fact in The Huntingtons case, it might just help.
