Description
Power and the Glory is the sophomore and final full-length album by the British hard rock band 100% Proof, released on S.B. Record Company in 1983. The album was recorded and mixed during June 1983 by Lol Cooper at Cavalier Studios in Stockport, England; with Cooper and the band producing.
Featuring Charlie Wilson on rhythm guitar and vocals, Steve Wright on rhythm and lead guitar as well as vocals, P. Savage on keyboards, and a rhythm section consisting of Steve Harrison on bass and Phil Wright on drums (the latter also featured on vocals on track B4).
Power and the Glory became the final album by 100% Proof. The band reached a bit of a plateau in 1983 after gaining some success and after a telivised gig in Dusseldorf they took a break. In this time guitarist Charlie Wilson decided he wanted to start a completely new outfit, Force 3, and the rest of the band agreed to carry on by replacing him with a keyboard player. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out and the band decided to call it a day. The album, released by Kosher Records in the US, had just started to take off in the States apparently selling out of 1000 at a Stryper gig.
The career of this Stockport band almost mirrored the rise of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and the resurgence of heavy rock in the face of the onslaught of the energy of punk. Having gained respect with a Norman Barratt produced debut album, the band, fronted by singer/guitarist Charlie Wilson, decided to be much more involved on the production side of this follow up. Consequently, they probably over egg the pudding but the album did gain them wider success in the USA because of the more polished sound. The band were always a hard working live act and gained a considerable following in the UK and headlined Greenbelt in 1983, the year ‘Power And The Glory’ was released. The addition of keyboards broadens their sound and the inclusion here of an instrumental version of «Jesus Loves Me» sees them not sticking to material that would strictly be considered metal. Highlights include the title track which is a bit of an epic including sound effects! «Out Of Bounds» rocks along at a fair pace and «Don’t You Know» reminds me a little of another UK rock band of the same era, UFO. Released on bright yellow vinyl in the USA, this album remains a classic of the era for those in the know. Over a quarter of a century later, it’s travelled pretty well and fans of classic rock should seek it out. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, December 2010]
The S.B. records label initials stands for Stuart Beard. He was the 100% Proof lighting engineer. Stuart fronted the band the money to do this album, which by the way after the band disbanded in 1984 the master recording’s for this album were sold to Kosher Records in America. (You might remember seeing there ads in early HM Mags?) Thus you have the Power and Glory yellow vinyl release on Kosher records in 1987 directly from those master tapes! I believe this cassette tape was released “posthumous“ after band disbanded and was made from the Kosher Records master’s around 1985/86. They just used the S.B instead of Kosher name? The sound quality on this cassette tape is far superior to the original S.B Records 1983 (UK) vinyl release. The guitars/bass/drums are very LOUD and CLEAR less muddy mix! AMAZING by 1983 standards this album is BEYOND INCREDIBLE! [Evan Wall, 2021]
