Description
Swine Flew is the sophomore album by the American punk and hard rock band One Bad Pig, released on Myrrh Records in 1990, a division of Word. The album was recorded by Lee Groitzsch and John Kunz at Digital Recorders, Uptown Nashville and OmniSound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee; with Billy Smiley of White Heart fame producing. Mixed by Smiley and Groitzsch.
The porcine punkers have returned with their third album, the first for Myrrh. On their ‘Smash’ album, the Pig sang “One Bad Pig… what a stupid name.” You’ll get no argument for me there, but there’s nothing stupid about the Pig’s talent. Within the confines of a somewhat limited musical genre, the Pig has adopted a freewheeling musical sensibility, and a clever and often poignant lyrical attitude. «See Me Sweat», the opening track on ‘Swine Flew’, sets the tone for this approach. Over a hammer-down rhythm section, lead “screamer” Carey “Kosher” Womack shouts “…in Gethsemane/ Hear His broken sobs/ ‘Take this cup from me’/ Perspiration falls/ Like great drops of blood.” Whew! Now that is heavy. Somewhat more in keeping with the Pig’s brash sense of humor are «Altar Ego», «Hey Punk», (“…your anarchy is slavery”) and «We Want You» (“So sing Amy, sing BeBe, sing Sandi… we want the same thing… we want You”). Long-time Christian music fans will be intrigued by «Christmas Time» and Petra’s «Judas Kiss» (featuring lead guitar by Bob Hartman).
Several other high-profile guests such as Phil Keaggy, Dann Huff, and Tommy Sims are hams for a day, but the focus remains on the Pig. These thirteen songs were reportedly cut in a week and a half, and I’ve heard albums made in a year and a half that didn’t nail a groove as well as this. Although far from “ready for prime time,” ‘Swine Flew’ goes a long way toward establishing One Bad Pig as one of the most creative bands working in metal-oriented music. [Bruce A.
