Description
Tape Head is the seventh album by the American progressive hard rock band King’s X, released on Metal Blade Records in October 1998. The album was produced and recorded May-July 1998 by band member Ty Tabor at Hound Pound Recording studio and Alien Beans. Mixed and mastered by Tabor at Alien Beans. “World” is a reworked song from their Sneak Preview demos.
After many years with Atlantic Records, King’s X have finally found a label who seem as passionate as they do about communicating their musical vision; namely unashamed art that’s both intelligently honest and beautifully executed. Tape Head’ (the band’s seventh studio album to date) eloquently marks 10 years since the release of ‘Out Of The Silent Planet’ (King’s X debut for Mega force-Worldwide). This much anticipated release marries the harder moments of ‘Ear Candy’ with the raw intensity of ‘Dogman’, resulting in a work that is sonically rich but by no means void of originality. Tape Head’ is inexplicably unique with regards to their previous work, however. Whilst hard to believe the album’s overall mood and tone display a heightened level of maturity; which merely goes part way in describing the novel element which is so evidently at work throughout the album. All the familiar King’s X traits are back: vocal harmonies, subtle phrasing, hard hitting melodies laden with catchy hooks and witty arrangements. Doug sings lead on all songs except «Ocean», for which Ty steps in; explaining how creation reminds him of God’s hand in his life, and that whilst he may feel like a lone flower in the midst of a parched desert, with faith, hope and love God will see him home. Spiritually more hopeful than ‘Ear Candy’, Tape Head’ does acknowledge God, the Kingdom of Heaven and light within («Happy»). A truly unique collection of well crafted songs, in the hands of one of the best rock teams around. [Alex Figgis, Cross Rhythms, December 1998]
