Description
Running out of Time is the fifth and final studio album by the Canadian hard rock group Daniel Band, released on Refuge Records in 1988. The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Mark Wright with the band co-producing.
In 1990, guitarist Tony “Toni” Rossi released a solo album on Refuge Records entitled Love in the City, while co-vocalist Dan McCabe formed Dreamer which released Full Metal Racket in 1991.
On the four albums since its 1982 debut, ‘On Rock‘, Daniel Band has established a strong identity, producing finely-crafted hard rock albums. With difficulties making American touring only an occasional option for this Canadian quartet (and an unwillingness to play the poseur game that appears requisite with most near-metal) notwithstanding, Daniel Band offers serious ministry-oriented no-nonsense heavy sounds in simple, straightforward rock songs with a modicum of hooky melodic structure and little reliance on flash or trash. ‘Running Out of Time’ finds DB at the top of its form, reminding a new generation of metalheads of the value of thoughtful writing and production.
While not known for innovation (few in this form are), DB has built a reputation on solid, consistent songwriting, Dan McCabe’s Geddy Lee (Rush)-inspired vocal scream, and Tony Rossi’s ever-impressive ability to deliver hot, economical guitar solos. ‘Running out of Time’ has no laxity of hook-ridden pop/metal. Certainly «We Need Love» is the key to Christian rock airplay, while «Black or White», «Hold On», «Party in Heaven» and «Things are Changing», with messages of commitment, faithfulness, and joy, are sure to ring a visible chord of approval from this new generation of Christian headbangers.
Amid rumors of dissolution, ‘Running Out of Time’ assures a place for Daniel Band, and the future – given the band’s decision to continue on – depends on its ability to stretch beyond producing records that broach a safe Christian mainstream approach to hard rock. Daniel Band has yet to give us something that stands alongside the Whitesnakes, Bon Jovis and Hearts of this world. ‘Running Out of Time’ will touch the churchified kid who’s looking for an alternative to the radio, but probably not the kid who is not. Daniel Band is one band that is giving it a shot, and ‘Running’ is a step forward. [Brian Quincy Newcomb, CCM, August 1988]
