Description
Soon is the sole album by the American rock band Maranatha, independently released in 1971.
The band was “sponsored” by the New Milford Church of the Nazarene, who also sponsored several concerts in New York City. The first one was held in Carnegie Hall and the second was in the Felt Forum (part of Madison Square Garden). These concerts were called Jesus Joy and had quite the collection of Jesus Music “stars”. After recording Soon, the band toured up and down east coast evangelizing for two years.
Although they’re from the opposite end of the country, New Jersey’s Maranatha has that same long-haired home-grown west-coast guitar psych sound as Spokane’s Wilson McKinley. In fact I might go so far as to say that Soon is on equal footing with the classic Spirit Of Elijah – it’s that good. Guitarist Charlie Rizzo would later emerge with the more Southern-edged Emmaus Road Band, but here the style seems much more garage angled and hippie jamming. Loud hard-rock electric action on «Maranatha», «Resurrection», «Deeper Than The Mighty Rolling Sea», and «Coming Of The Lord», while «Do You Know My Jesus», «Let Us Rise» and «Amen» explore more acoustic moods. Some fun lively «Johnny B Goode»-styled r&r on «I Found Jesus». An insanely rare private press and easily one of the top US Christian monsters. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
