Description
Somethin’ Diff’rent is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Scott Anderson, released on Mercy Records in 1992, distributed by FMG Distribution. Three of the tracks were produced by Roby Duke (tracks 3, 6, and 7) while the rest were produced by Chris Thomason, Paul Salveson and Scott Anderson.
Anderson reminds me of the ultra-cool Sunday School teacher or youth pastor a lot of us knew; you really loved him because he was just a little hipper and slightly more dangerous than the rest of the church staff. And of course, he played the guitar and used music to teach his classes. However, in Anderson’s case, his musical gifts actually deserves to be heard outside the church basement.
The “somethin’ diff’rent” of the album’s title might well refer to Anderson’s sense of humor – kinda nutty, kinda cuckoo – or the fact that, musically, he’s produced an old-fashioned folk-rock record which doesn’t bow to any particular trends. Anderson dips his toe in several different musical waters without totally immersing himself in any particular pond.
Anderson’s young constituency receives no veiled metaphors or mixed messages, as evidenced by songs such as «There’s a Love» (“There’s a love I have found in Jesus”) and «Take Your Heart to Heaven» (“When you’re feeling down and out… take your heart to Heaven for a while”). Anderson successfully integrates an alternative rock approach (ala Rick Elias) on «I Shook the Hand of Time», while the bluesy attack he employs on «Still Holding on to the Good News», «Love Your Neighbor Kind of Stuff», «Lighthouse of Love» and «The Beat» reveals Anderson to be a direct descendant of Larry Norman (eerily so on «Love Song»). And that’s probably the most apt and flattering comparison of all – one man, one guitar, talking directly to the next generation of believers. With talented and dedicated performers like Anderson to carry on, the Good News is in good hands. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, February 1993]
