Jesus Music

Description

Jesus Music is the sole full-length album by the British garage rock band Living Stones, released on Focus in 1974. The album was engineered by Ian Sinclair at the studios of G.R.F. in Glasgow, Scotland. All songs written by band member Jim Sommerville.

Scotland again with another super good (and super rare) rock/psych goodie featuring four guys and one girl. A rather unique raw bluesy underground sound that’s heavily infused with a magical mix of wah-wah, fuzz and tremolo guitar (including some cool solo stretches). Not necessarily hard rocking, but definitely garagy, grungy and sporting an edge. Similar to the primitive style and lean arrangements of the Trinity House album, but much better, more tuneful, more psychedelic. «Disillusion» is described as “an aggressive rock opus” and it’s mightily aglow with the whole garage/psych thing. Nice crude slide guitar action on «You Always Will» and the title track. They muster up a catchy ‘Suzie Q’ kind of groove on «Going Down». A couple very pretty softer cuts with cello («Nothing Is Real» and «Jesus, I Think I Need You»). Same obscure Scottish label as the excellent Sanctus album. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]

Living Stones - Jesus Music (Focus 1975) LP Back and Front Cover Art

Living Stones played from mid-sixties until mid-seventies, mainly around Glasgow and the Central Belt of Scotland, although we made numerous trips further north and south, Aberdeen, Nottingham, Newcastle etc, and played at the first Greenbelt in 1974. We were all amateur musicians pusuing a common goal of spreading our faith, and pursuing various careers at the same time. We took our Gospel music to youth clubs, outreach cafes, youth fellowships, borstals, Jesus rallies, and accompanied the evangelist Arthur Blessitt on his many visits to Scotland. We made an E.P. record in the early seventies, and this album, Jesus Music, was released in 1974. It is humbling and flattering to see the current interest in our record, and also in gospel music and groups of that period. [Jim Sommerville]
