Description

Distant Journey is the 13th album by the American pop/rock band David & the Giants, independently released on Giant Records in 1990, distributed by The Benson Company. The album was produced by band member David Huff.

It’s nice to know that one can always count on David and the Giants for straight-ahead Christian rock ‘n’ roll. Although there are several mellow tunes, the bulk of ‘Distant Journey’ sizzles with a blues-rock sound.

The four guys from Forest, Mississippi crack into the tracks with the opening song, «Never Had It so Good», a solid rocker, that just feels good! «Anchored Deep» makes interesting use of the Hammond B-3 sound offers a soulful vocal from David Huff that is quite memorable. The title track tips its hat to the country/rock genre with some hip and twangy guitar effects, while in «Won’t Stop Believing» Rayborn Huff spices up the track with a tasty use of the harmonica. Two ballads, «Always on My Mind», and «Can’t Live Without You» focus on the singer’s love for, and long-term relationship with, God.

There’s a noticeable maturity and growth in the band with this latest project. Huff’s ability as a tunesmith has definitely intensified, and the gritty, soulful vocals sound like the Huffs could be best friends with Bonnie Raitt. Both the vocals and the rhythm section create a tasty, blues-tinged, R&B dynamic that makes ‘Distant Journey’ the band’s most interesting, and I believe, strongest work to date.
