Description
Gospel Train is an album by the American gospel singer, songwriter, and blues guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe, released on Mercury in 1956.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe (March 20, 1915 – October 9, 1973) attained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings, characterized by a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and rhythmic accompaniment that was a precursor of rock and roll. She was the first great recording star of gospel music and among the first gospel musicians to appeal to rhythm-and-blues and rock-and-roll audiences, later being referred to as “the original soul sister” and “the godmother of rock and roll”. She influenced early rock-and-roll musicians, including Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis.
The late gospel singer and guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe is to be inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on 14th April, 2018. Wrote Mojo magazine, “Tharpe’s contribution to the story of rock ‘n’ roll would continue to be undervalued outside the community of British R&B fans – despite her influence on Johnny Cash, Little Richard and her trailblazing status as a transatlantic icon of the electric guitar. Tharpe’s induction on 14th April into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame (with an “Award for Early Influence”) 45 years since her death in 1973, is overdue recognition for the unforgettable sound and sight of this remarkable woman. As Johnny Cash put it on his own production in 1992, “I can still see Sister Rosetta playing that Stella guitar.”
