‘Inside Out’ is the latest and most creative release from Christian music’s premier studio rock band, Idle Cure. Currently consisting of Steve Shannon (vocalist), Mark Ambrose (guitars), Pete Lomakin (keys), and Clark Edmond (drums), Idle Cure is a band that is proving itself through great songwriting. Over the course of three albums, Idle Cure has constructed songs based largely on the big but generic guitar and keyboard sounds found in the popular commercial hard rock bands of the day. It’s worked for them in the past, and with ‘Inside Out’ they hope it will work for them again.
This time around however, Idle Cure seems to have given up the attempts to write hard rock/metal songs, and focused more on pop/hard rock style ballads. With tender yet convicting songs like «Who Cries For Me» (about the abortion issue) and the call to worship cut «Holy Mountain», these guys have proven that their ballad forumla is finally in sync. When Idle Cure does send it into overdrive, its sound is much more convincing than on previous rockers. Cuts like «Redline», «We’ve Lost Ground» and «Tear Down the Walls» definitely convey a sense of labored uniqueness that the harder songs on the band’s last two projects have sorely missed.
Overall, ‘Inside Out’ is one step closer to that great, gutsy, heart-felt album Idle Cure has hinted at. Let’s hope that this is the project that allowed them to purge that final bit of systematic songwriting technique. At the least it’s the best work to date. [Ross Cluver, CCM, January 1992]
