R U Gonna Stand Up is the twelfth album by the American pop/rock band David & the Giants, independently released on Giant Records in 1989, distributed by The Benson Company. The album was produced by band member David Huff.
Trivia: The still popular radio hit “Here’s My Heart” was produced from this album. Thanks to a mislabeled CD that was supposed to be from Soul II Soul, WNCI Program Director Dave Robbins from Columbus Ohio liked the song enough to put it on the air. WNCI received such a positive response that it was added into regular rotation.
The Huffs may have learned how 2 spell from Prince, and it seems they got their songwriting ideas from listening to the radio. Probably not “Z-Rock” either – this sounds more like what you’d hear on one of those adult stations – you know, the ones that call themselves “Lite Favorites” or “Sunny” something-or-other.
‘R U Gonna Stand Up’ is a strong set of airplay-able pop ballads in the mold of Michael McDonald and Paul Davis, which is to say they are tuneful, polished, and well-crafted, balanced by somewhat grittier rock with a regional accent.
Among the highlights: «Everybody Got a Story» – narrative detail combined with evangelistic salesmanship; «Love Has a Place» and «Here’s My Heart» a blend of smooth melodies and even smoother vocals. The title track, along with «Everybody Needs Love» toughen up the mix with rock punch. [Mark Eischer, CCM, August 1989]
