He is the Light is an album by the American soul singer and songwriter Al Green, released by A&M Records in 1985. The album was produced and recorded by Willie Mitchell at Willie Mitchell Recording in Memphis, Tennessee. Mixed by Perry Michael Allen and Willie Mitchell.
‘He Is the Light’ is a reunion of sorts for Al Green. First, Green is reunited with Willie Mitchell, his producer of many years. Second, Green’s musical direction points back to the “Memphis soul” sound that he became noted for on his many hits recorded on the Hi/Cream label during the ’70s. This album shows Al Green at his best – crooning, shouting, and preaching as only he can.
«Power» recaptures Green’s hit-making days with smooth and sensitive vocals. Highlighting this cut is the spoken rap reminiscent of the romantic styling of Barry White and Isaac Hayes. «Going Away» and his cover of the hit «You Brought the Sunshine» show off the singer’s power. Green is in control here. The background vocals and producer Mitchell’s rhythm and string arrangements enhance the dexterity of the music.
Black gospel music is noted for its uplifting “Sunday morning” feel, and Green takes us to church on «Be With Me Jesus» and «Nearer My God to Thee».
