Description
Lord Lift Us Up is the debut album by the American gospel and R&B/soul duo Bebe & Cece Winans, released on PTL Records in 1984. The album was engineered by Bob Whyley, Christopher Banninger, and Win Kutz with Bill Maxwell of Koinonia fame producing. Music arranged by Scott Smith. Featuring Koinonia as backing band.
The younger siblings of the wonderfully talented Winans, BeBe (Benjamin) and CeCe (Priscilla) produce a more contemporary sound than their elders, aided by Bill Maxwell’s punchy, tuneful production. The up-tempo cuts, especially «Worth the While» and «I Really Love You», feature a solid groove and BeBe’s confident, James Ingram-styled vocals.
Favorite cuts include an emotional, full-bodied version of the Joe Cocker-Jennifer Warnes hit «Up Where We Belong» and BeBe’s love song to his sister on her wedding day, «I’m Gonna Miss You». On the new version of «Up Where We Belong», the mixture of family voices (aided by the whole Winans crew) and a spectacular, dramatic ending can easily make you forget the original. The lyrics to «I’m Gonna Miss You» were so moving and lovingly sung that I cried the first time I heard them. And when I played it for my sister, she cried too. [Bob Darden, CCM, March 1985]
