The Stovall Sisters

Description

The self-titled and sole album by the American gospel trio The Stovall Sisters (Lillian, Netta, and Joyce) was released on Reprise Records in 1971. The album was recorded by Russ Gary in San Francisco with Erik Jacobsen and William Truckaway producing for Sweet Reliable Productions.

Featuring a cover of Norman Greenbaum’s classic “Spirit in the Sky”, originally recorded by Greenbaum on his 1969-album by the same title. (The Stovall Sisters actually provided back-up vocals on Greenbaum’s own recording of the song. And Greenbaum’s producer Erik Jacobsen also produced The Stovall Sisters’ effort.) The track “Hang On In There” was later sampled in the Grammy nominated song “Intergalactic” by the Beastie Boys.

The Stovall Sisters also released a two-sided single entitled You Can Forget It in 1966, under the moniker The Sisters Three. The sisters as well briefly performed as the Ikettes with Ike & Tina Turner, 1967. After their sole album on Reprise Records, The Stovall Sisters would go on to record unreleased tracks for an album with Earth, Wind & Fire’s Philip Bailey and Maurice White but would disband before its release.
