Description
Before My Eyes is an album by the British folk duo Sonrise (Grahame Knox and Ray Steel), released on Grapevine Records in 1976. The album was recorded and mixed (reduced) by Mick John at Canon Sound in Chester, England, with Sue McClellan and Pete Yates-Round producing, both of Parchment fame. All songs written by Grahame Knox.
Featuring Grahame Knox on guitar and lead vocals and Ray Steel on guitar and backing vocals, backed by Andy Wood on flageolet flute and backing vocals, John Pac on mandolin, Gerry Page on bass (with Mick Ryan sitting in on bass on tracks A4 and B6), and Pete Yates-Round on drums, as well as Sue McClellan providing backing vocals.
Sparkling clean soft folkrock and acoustic music from the British duo of Grahame Knox and Ray Steel, with additional instrumental backing by Parchment. Sonrise sounds less commercial than Malcolm & Alwyn or Stewart & Kyle, relying on the strength of their vocal harmonies and giving acoustic guitars the spotlight while avoiding keyboards and orchestration. «You Are My King», «Salt And Light» and «Toe The Line» are all carried along by a strumming folkrock beat, while «Heaven Bound», «Mary Magdalene» and «The Healer» have their floating melodies gently sustained by glistening guitar interplay. «Pilgrim», «In The Garden», the mandolin-backed «Sonrise» – there are so many beautiful songs on here. Melodic, peaceful, expressive – the kind of music you put on and people start saying “hey, that’s real pretty”. All eleven songs written by Knox. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
