Description
Genuine Imitation Life is the third album by the American folk group The Forerunners (a Campus Crusade for Christ outfit originally formed in Southern California in 1967), released in the UK on Key Records in 1971. Also released by Creative Sound in the US featuring a slightly different track list order (and leaving out two tracks, “I’ve Got The Love” and the Simon & Garfunkel classic “Bridge Over Troubled Water”). The album was recorded at City of London Studios in London, England as a MGO (Musical Gospel Outreach) Production.
It’s basically a collection of cover songs, featuring tracks like Bob Dylan’s “When the Ship Comes In”, Joe South’s “Games People Play” (South’s own recording of the song won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1970), the Edwin Hawkins classic “O Happy Day“; “It’s Not As Though”, a song written by Judy MacKenzie and originally featured on her debut album, Judy; as well as three song written by Michael Omartian – “Born Yesterday”, “Revolution Now”, and “I’ve Got The Love” (the first one originally recorded by The New Folk on their 1968-album Born Yesterday, while the latter two songs were recorded by the same group in 1970, under a new moniker – Armageddon – and featured on their album entitled The Armageddon Experience).
It’s the imitation of the genuine that brings the let-down. Dig your teeth into a plastic orange to get the message.
And today even reality seems artificial, complete with synthetic joy and papier mache security. It is all very much genuine imitation life.
But the present generation has not been silent about the situation.
The Forerunners provide the answer as to where genuine true life can be found.
It is this that they share. [Note on the back of the LP sleeve]
