Wait’ll You Hear This! is a live album by the American singer and songwriter Noel Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul & Mary fame) & The Bodyworks Band, released on NewPax Records in 1982, distributed by The Benson Company.
Listening to Noel Paul Stookey is a distinct pleasure. Whether it be on a studio album, in concert or as in the case of ‘Wait’ll You Hear This!’ (NewPax NP33120) the result is always the same: pronounced enjoyment. There is something almost magical about the way Noel communicates with an audience. This group at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida found itself imitating a mouse tap-dancing to the tune of «Tea for Two». If that’s not audience rapport, I don’t know what is.
This is not another live album filled with just previously recorded material. In fact, out of the 14 cuts only five appear on previous Stookey releases. There is a wonderful variety in this collection of songs. On everything from «Garden», made famous by John Denver, to «Be Ye Glad», a Michael Blanchard tune also on the newest Glad LP, Noel’s backup band is eminently capable with Jimmy Nalls on electric guitar, Dennis Bouchard on keyboard, Kent Palmer on bass and Karla Thibodeau Sarro on vocals and synthesizer. Karla complements Stookey well on the title track with her instruments and shines on the tune «Not As We Are», in which she sings lead vocal.
In many cases I find the live version of a previous studio recording to be weak and lackluster. Not so on this album, especially with «Know Jesus». Stookey knows how to make his audience comfortable, and that feeling comes right through the vinyl.
‘Wait’ll You Hear This!’ is the next best thing to seeing Noel Paul Stookey in person. [Jim Coye, CCM, September 1982]
