Thinking It Over

Description

Thinking It Over is the sole album by the British singer/songwriter duo Dave & Judy (Dave Cooke and Judy MacKenzie), released on EMI Records in 1974. The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, England; with Walter J. Ridley producing. Conducted and arranged by Harry Robinson. All music written by Dave Cooke (with lyrics by Malcolm Thomas; tracks A2, A4, B1, B2, B4, and Judy McKenzie; tracks A1, A3, A5, A6, B3, B6) except “Without Jesus” written by Judy McKenzie.

Dave Cooke, a former member of Ministry Of Power, would later work with singer/songwriter Paul Field of Nutshell fame, starting off with Field’s solo debut album Restless Heart. Cooke finally ended up as a renowned maestro of TV music, writing and recording for various BBC series, among others.

For this British mainstream release Judy MacKenzie teamed up with Dave Cooke for a diverse album of rock, pop, folk and ballads. Dave wrote most of the music, while Judy focuses more on lyrics. Although I’m personally more drawn to her Key albums, Thinking It Over is a very strong record, even if it does lean away from folk toward a more fully-arranged commercial sound (including a few brass and string arrangements). Mostly on the quiet side, although the opening «Nobody Wants To Know» has some good rocking electric guitar. Nice samplings of dreamy soft rock («Wild Flowers»), jazz rock («Dreams»), acoustic blues with harmonica («The Reason Why»), breezy folk/pop («Wings Of The Moming») and slow torch moods (the title track). «Brand New Season» reminds me a little of Parchment.
