Description

On My Way is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Phillip Sandifer, released on Urgent Records in 1984, distributed by Sparrow Distribution. The album was recorded and mixed by Larry Seyer at Austin Recording Studio in Austin, Texas; with Gary Powell producing for Powell Studio Productions. Arranged, orchestrated, and conducted by Powell. All songs written by Phillip Sandifer except tracks A1 and A3 co-written with Gary Powell and tracks A4 and B2 co-written with B. Simon.

Featuring Phillip Sandifer and Mitch Watkins on acoustic guitar, Bill Ginn on acoustic piano (and synthesizer overdubs); Brian Green on Fender Rhodes piano (and synthesizer overdubs); Spencer Starnes on bass; and John Treanor on drums and percussion.

Sandifer is a strong newcomer to contemporary Christian music with a wonderfully off-hand delivery and a host of musical gifts. He can sound (and write) like a Dan Fogelberg («Brian») or a Larry Gatlin («On My Way») or a Phil Collins («Don’t Shoot the Wounded»).

I realize that’s pretty heady company, but this guy’s good. He makes the ballads «Let Her Dance», «Who Will Be There», and «Listen to the Children» sound fresh – and he can drop a little unexpected salsa on you («Should It Ever Rain Again») and make it work.

My favorite is «On My Way», with its spectacular opening a cappella verse and this feisty line: “And the holy name of Jesus/ Will echo as our call/ And will cause the feeble gates/ Of hell to fall.” But the quirky, inventive, percussion-based «Don’t Shoot the Wounded» is a close second.
