Description
Come Closer is an album by the American country-rock trio Desert Water Band, released on MAG in 1980.
Of all the Southern and country rock customs in these pages Come Closer from the Virginia threesome of Dennis Baker, Wayne Hagar and Lonnie Klepper has to lie near the top of the heap. Fits in somewhere close to progressive rural melodic mid-rocking groups like Sons Unto Glory and Horizon, though these guys are noticeably heavier. The music is exciting and original, set apart by some striking guitar work, both rhythm and lead including lots of jamming, sustained echoey vibes, unusual jazz-influenced chords and some dissonant out-of-tune effects. The opener «King Of My Dreams» features some cool acoustic and electric guitar interplay reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Other sections reveal bluesy classic rock strains of The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as infectious jazzy lounge grooves like an edgier Sweet Comfort Band. Mandolin, fiddle and harmonica appear for the hoe-down closer «It’s Yours Not Mine». Amidst the dry lands of ‘80s Christian music Desert Water Band emerges a genuine thirst quencher.
