Across the Bridge / Where Could I Go? [7-inch single]

Description

Across the Bridge – b/w “Where Could I Go?” – is a two-sided 7-inch vinyl single by the British gospel beat group The Soul Seekers, released in the UK on Evangelical Recordings in 1966, produced for International Evangelistic Fellowship.

Back in the ’60s, this group recorded three albums and a handful of singles. One of those albums was backing 50s rock’n’roller Terry Dene who’d subsequently become a Christian. The Soulseekers were British Jamaicans and this 1966 single is at the intersection of gospel and Jesus music but swings with more conviction! «Across The Bridge» is a gospel number but given a slightly Shadows style guitar and a great vocal treatment from singer Tony Mossop. Mossop went on to record the original reggae version of «Red Red Wine» under the name Tony Tribe and wrote his own short chapter of mainstream fame! Certainly his soulful vocals really pay off here on «Where Could I Go?» which again blends pop, gospel and ’60s beat music into something very catchy. The group disbanded in the late ’60s and some members joined Out Of Darkness including Wray Powell who gained a reputation as a Hendrix-style guitarist. Mossop himself sadly passed away in a car accident in 1971. This intriguing collector’s item single is a fascinating memento of the early UK Christian music scene.
